EYFS playground markings
Markings for under-fives are a different job from markings for juniors. The shapes are bigger and simpler, colours matter more than numbers, and the best ones invite children to move: hop, follow, ride, stop and go.
In England the EYFS statutory framework sets physical development and mathematics among its areas of learning, and a small number of well-chosen markings in the outdoor area supports both every day.

Markings that suit under-fives
- A road layout with a roundabout and crossing for trikes and scooters.
- Number lines and a number snake 1 to 10, rather than a 100 square.
- Shapes and colour spots for naming, sorting and jumping games.
- Footprints, hand prints and wiggly lines for balance and movement.
- A large target or circle for gathering and throwing games.
- Plenty of blank tarmac for chalk and wheeled toys.

Where these figures come from
Installed ranges are from published UK contractor price guides (autumn 2026), not named here. Several national contractors also set a minimum order of about £1,000 plus VAT. All figures before VAT. A guide, not a quote. Supply-only figures are list prices for preformed thermoplastic from published UK price lists (autumn 2026): the material only, before anyone lays it.
Getting an EYFS area right
Fewer, bigger, simpler
Under-fives use a handful of strong shapes far more than a busy carpet of games. Leave most of the tarmac blank.
Think about wheels
If trikes and scooters use the area, a road loop with a crossing gives them a route and keeps them off the quiet corner.
Grip matters more
Small children fall more. Ask for a beaded, non-slip finish and avoid large glossy areas.
Match the cohort
Nursery and Reception may share the space; numbers to 10 and 20 suit both, with bigger grids saved for Key Stage 1.
How markings support the early learning goals
Physical development in the EYFS includes balance, coordination and moving in different ways; a footprint trail or a wiggly line to follow does exactly that. Mathematics covers counting, number and patterns; a number line children can jump along makes counting physical.
None of this needs a large scheme. A road layout, a number line and a few shapes, chosen with the EYFS lead, cover most of it.

Talk to the EYFS lead
How the outdoor area is used through the day, where wheeled toys go, and what children already enjoy.
Layout drawing
A scaled plan showing every marking, its size and colour and the gaps between them. Ask for it in writing; it is how you compare two quotes fairly.
Clean, prime, lay
The surface is swept and dried, primed where the tarmac is old, then each marking is set out and heated or sprayed into place. Most schemes take one to three days.
Handover
Markings are ready to walk on once cool or dry. Keep the layout drawing and the contractor’s guarantee terms with your site records.
Questions schools ask about markings
How much do EYFS playground markings cost?
Typically £250 to £2,000 installed, before VAT, from a few shapes at the low end to a full road layout and number area at the top.
What markings are best for nursery children?
Simple, large and movement-led: a road loop, a number line to 10, colour spots, shapes and footprint trails. Leave plenty of blank space.
Are thermoplastic markings safe for young children?
Yes, when finished with glass beads for grip. They sit flush with the tarmac, so there is no trip edge.
Can the markings be done during term?
Often, in a day when the outdoor area can be closed. Most contractors prefer a dry spell in a half-term or holiday.
Is there a minimum order?
Often, yes. Travel, the burner kit and a day’s labour cost the same for one hopscotch as for ten markings, so several national contractors set a minimum of about £1,000 plus VAT. Grouping your markings into one visit is the cheapest way to buy them.

Thanks, your enquiry is in.
- We look for a marking contractor who covers your area, then email or phone you with their name.
- Nothing is passed on until you tell us to go ahead.
- The contractor looks at the tarmac, draws a layout and prices it. We never send marketing.
